AUDI E5 Sportback Electrifies China With 402-Mile Range, Dual Motors, and Game-Changing Price

Audi’s decision to launch a stand-alone EV brand in China, written in all caps as AUDI, is beginning to look like a masterstroke. The sub-brand’s first model, the AUDI E5 Sportback, has taken the market by storm with its combination of German engineering, futuristic design, and affordability—a rare trifecta in today’s electric vehicle landscape.

When pre-orders for the E5 Sportback opened on August 18, the results were immediate: over 10,000 reservations were logged in just 30 minutes. While such figures are often seen with Chinese EV startups like NIO or XPeng, they are far less common for established global players like Audi. More importantly, the pre-order frenzy created a sense of FOMO that reinforced the car’s appeal, proving that AUDI has found the right formula for China’s hyper-competitive EV market.

Of course, these reservations don’t necessarily translate into guaranteed sales, as they are not backed by non-refundable deposits. However, the sheer volume of interest demonstrates strong consumer confidence in the new sub-brand.

Power, Range, and Price That Challenge Rivals

The entry-level Pioneer model starts at just 235,900 yuan ($33,100), positioning it as an affordable yet powerful EV. It comes equipped with a 76 kWh battery pack, delivering 295 hp and an impressive 384 miles (618 km) of range.

Moving up the lineup, the Pioneer Plus offers 402 hp, rear-wheel drive, and a 100 kWh battery, starting at 269,900 yuan ($38,000). Another variant delivers 518 hp through dual motors paired with an 83 kWh pack at the same entry price.

At the top of the range is the Flagship Quattro, boasting 776 hp, dual motors, and an astonishing 402 miles (647 km) of range—all starting at 319,900 yuan ($45,000). When compared to Western competitors such as the Tesla Model Y or the BMW iX3, the E5 offers not just a competitive price point but also features that rival or surpass them.

A Cabin Built for the Future

The interior of the AUDI E5 Sportback is radically different from what Western Audi customers might expect. Instead of the conservative luxury styling seen in the Audi Q4 e-tron or Q8 e-tron, the E5 takes inspiration from Chinese EV design trends. Its cabin features a stunning 59-inch panoramic screen that spans the entire dashboard, digital wing mirrors, soft-touch leather and Alcantara, and wireless smartphone charging. This approach reflects the tech-first expectations of Chinese buyers, who increasingly prioritize connectivity and innovation over tradition.

A Strategic Bet in the World’s Largest EV Market

China represents the largest and fastest-growing EV market in the world, and global brands like Audi are under pressure to adapt. By launching AUDI as a China-exclusive sub-brand, the German automaker is directly targeting local competitors and aiming to capture younger, tech-savvy buyers.

With its mix of cutting-edge performance, bold design, and competitive pricing, the AUDI E5 Sportback could very well become a turning point not only for Audi in China but also for the future of global EV competition.
