BMW iX3 Neue Klasse : 800 km Range, Ultra-Fast Charging, and Revolutionary Design

BMW has been working on its ambitious Neue Klasse project for over four years, a strategic reinvention of electric mobility that aims to set entirely new standards in the automotive industry. The promise is bold: up to 800 km of range, just 10 minutes of charging for 350 km, and unmistakable BMW driving dynamics. The first production model to debut this next-generation technology is the all-new BMW iX3 Neue Klasse, set to hit dealerships in March 2026 after its grand unveiling at the IAA Mobility Show in Munich (September 9–14, 2025).

Unlike past strategies, BMW chose not to debut its latest EV innovations on flagship models like the BMW 7 Series or X7. Instead, the Neue Klasse begins at the core of the lineup, with the family-oriented iX3 SUV—a decision aimed at volume sales and market conquest, particularly against rivals such as Audi and Mercedes-Benz. CEO Oliver Zipse has confirmed that by 2027, the entire BMW portfolio will benefit from the breakthroughs introduced by the iX3.

Neo-Retro Styling Inspired by History

The iX3 combines futuristic proportions with design cues inspired by the 1960s BMW Neue Klasse sedan, which redefined the brand in its era. BMW’s design chief Adrian Van Hooydonk highlights the clean, minimalist lines punctuated by sharp, strategic contours. The illuminated horizontal lines on the nose pay homage to the classic chrome kidney grille of the past, while maintaining aerodynamic efficiency with a remarkable drag coefficient of 0.24.

At 4.78 meters long, 1.90 meters wide, and 1.64 meters tall, the iX3 matches the proportions of the latest BMW X3, but its modern touches such as flush door handles and sleek LED lighting create a more futuristic identity.

Panoramic iDrive and Digital Interior Innovation

Inside, BMW reinvents its iDrive system once again with the introduction of the iDrive Panoramic Display. A 110 cm-wide (43.3-inch) digital strip is integrated at the base of the windshield, reducing visual clutter while displaying customizable driving data. This is complemented by a 17.9-inch central touchscreen, creating a futuristic cockpit without compromising functionality.

Rear passengers benefit from a flat floor, adjustable 40/20/40 seats, and a ski hatch for added practicality. Cargo space is generous, with 520 liters in the rear trunk plus 58 liters in the front trunk (frunk).

Performance, Range, and Charging

Built on BMW’s new Cell-to-Pack NMC battery technology, the iX3 houses a 108 kWh pack with 20% higher energy density than current EV batteries. It promises an impressive WLTP range of 800 km, although real-world conditions will likely deliver slightly less. The dual-motor xDrive setup produces 470 hp and 645 Nm of torque, allowing 0–100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds, with a top speed of 210 km/h.

Charging is where the Neue Klasse truly shines. Thanks to its 800V architecture and 400 kW charging capability, drivers can regain 350 km of range in just 10 minutes—putting it ahead of many competitors like the Audi Q6 e-tron or Mercedes GLC EQ Technology.

Pricing and Market Launch

The launch model will be the BMW iX3 50 xDrive Neue Klasse, with prices in France ranging from €71,950 to €78,250 depending on trim (Base, M Sport, M Sport Pro). Deliveries are expected to begin in March 2026, with leasing offers starting at €740/month on a 48-month LLD plan.

BMW will build the iX3 at its Debrecen factory in Hungary, while the Munich plant will handle the production of the upcoming BMW i3 Neue Klasse sedan. With these moves, BMW is clearly signaling that the Neue Klasse is not just a car—it’s the start of a new era in premium electric mobility.
