Leapmotor B05 : Affordable Compact EV Unveiled in Munich, Aiming at VW ID.3 and Renault Mégane E-Tech

Unveiled in a world premiere at the Munich Motor Show, the Leapmotor B05 is set to shake up the European compact electric car market. Measuring 4.43 meters in length and 1.88 meters in width, this striking EV blends coupe-inspired styling with practicality, positioning itself as a bold and affordable alternative to established rivals such as the Volkswagen ID.3, the Renault Mégane E-Tech, and the Peugeot e-308.
This model is the second step in Leapmotor’s European expansion following the B10 SUV, and it highlights the Chinese brand’s ambitions to secure a foothold in Europe’s most competitive segments. Supported by automotive giant Stellantis, Leapmotor is leveraging its LEAP 3.5 platform to offer performance, efficiency, and affordability in a sleek package tailored for European drivers.
Sporty and Distinctive Design
Marketed as a “compact coupe,” the B05 is technically a five-door hatchback with a sporty edge. Frameless windows, a sloping roofline, and 19-inch alloy wheels provide a dynamic profile, while design cues like the full-width LED light bars front and rear link it visually to the B10 SUV.
Sharp-eyed observers will notice some design inspirations: from certain angles, the front recalls the Volkswagen Golf, while the rear evokes memories of the Renault Mégane R.S., especially in its bright yellow display model with a rear spoiler. With a generous 2.73-meter wheelbase, the B05 promises impressive interior space, even though the cabin remains hidden for now behind tinted windows. Expect a 14.6-inch infotainment display and Leapmotor’s latest connected tech inside.
Powertrain and Performance
Under the hood, the B05 is expected to carry over the B10 SUV’s mechanical setup: a 218 hp electric motor and a choice between two batteries, 56.2 kWh and 67.1 kWh. Thanks to its lower, sleeker body, the B05 could surpass the SUV’s 434 km WLTP range, making it a strong contender for daily commutes and longer journeys alike.
Competitive Pricing and Local Production
One of the most compelling aspects of the B05 is its pricing strategy. Early indicators suggest an entry-level price under €30,000, significantly more affordable than the Volkswagen ID.3 (€34,990) and the Renault Mégane E-Tech (€39,500).
Production will eventually move to the Stellantis plant in Zaragoza, Spain, ensuring compliance with European manufacturing standards and eligibility for local EV incentives such as the French ecological bonus. This European production base also underscores Leapmotor’s long-term commitment to the region.
A New Disruptor in the EV Market
With the compact EV hatchback segment heating up, the Leapmotor B05 is positioned as a game-changer. Its blend of sporty design, competitive range, affordable pricing, and Stellantis-backed production could make it one of the most disruptive entrants in Europe.
As European drivers increasingly demand accessible yet stylish EVs, the B05 may become the perfect middle ground: a model that delivers on performance and design without breaking the bank. Expect more details on trim levels, pricing, and availability as Leapmotor prepares for its official European rollout.
