Leapmotor Lafa 5 : The New Compact EV Hatchback Rivaling VW ID.3

A Bold New Challenger in Europe’s EV Market. The Leapmotor Lafa 5 is set to shake up Europe’s compact electric hatchback market, taking direct aim at the Volkswagen ID.3 and a growing list of rivals. Backed by Stellantis, Leapmotor is rapidly gaining momentum in global EV markets. The Lafa 5 represents the brand’s bold entry into one of the most competitive and fast-growing EV segments: the compact hatchback.
Unveiled through shadowy teasers ahead of its official debut at the IAA Mobility Show in Munich on September 9, 2025, the Lafa 5 brings clean lines, sharp proportions, and a sporty presence. Its recognizable LED signature headlights tie it seamlessly with Leapmotor’s expanding lineup while carving out its own identity in a crowded field.
Design Cues With Global Inspirations
At first glance, the Lafa 5 blends familiarity with fresh thinking. The short hood recalls the pre-facelift Kia EV6, while muscular rear shoulders evoke the Renault Megane E-Tech Electric. At the rear, sleek full-width LED taillights add a premium touch reminiscent of Porsche design cues.

What makes the Lafa 5 even more intriguing is the inclusion of a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor, signaling Leapmotor’s ambitions in advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and semi-autonomous driving—a feature that could give it an edge over mainstream competitors.
Built on Leapmotor’s LEAP 3.5 Architecture
Like the Leapmotor B10 crossover, the Lafa 5 is expected to sit on the brand’s versatile LEAP 3.5 platform. This architecture supports a rear-mounted electric motor producing up to 215 hp (160 kW / 218 PS) and is paired with a 67.1 kWh battery pack, enabling competitive range figures. While official numbers remain under wraps, it’s safe to assume the Lafa 5 will offer similar specs, placing it firmly in the league of the VW ID.3, Peugeot E-308, and Opel Astra Electric.
Leapmotor’s Record Growth
The teaser campaign coincided with Leapmotor announcing a record-breaking sales month in August 2025, delivering 57,066 vehicles, an impressive 88% increase year-over-year. This milestone underlines the brand’s accelerating rise, particularly in China, and highlights Stellantis’ strategy of pushing Leapmotor into global EV markets, starting with Europe.

Company VP Cao Li emphasized that the Lafa 5 is aimed at young drivers who “refuse to settle, conform, or be ordinary.” That rebellious spirit is aimed squarely at Europe’s younger EV buyers, who crave design flair, cutting-edge technology, and affordability.
A Packed Competitive Field
The Lafa 5 will not only compete with the Volkswagen ID.3, but also with the Cupra Born, Peugeot E-308, Opel Astra Electric, MG4, BYD Dolphin, and Renault Megane E-Tech Electric. This crowded landscape is what makes Leapmotor’s European debut both exciting and challenging. If priced competitively, the Lafa 5 could become one of the surprise EV disruptors of 2025 and beyond.
All details, including final specs and pricing, will be revealed when the Leapmotor Lafa 5 debuts at the Munich Motor Show next week.
