Mercedes-AMG Considering an Electric GT Coupé to Rival the Porsche 911

Mercedes-AMG is seriously evaluating the idea of bringing an electric version of its AMG GT coupé to market. According to AMG boss Michael Schiebe, the project is technically feasible — but its launch will depend on whether there’s a market big enough to justify the significant investment.

The news comes after Mercedes-AMG confirmed that the GT 4-Door Coupé successor will debut next year as a fully electric model, previewed by the striking AMG GT XX Concept. Built on the brand’s upcoming 800V AMG.EA platform, this model will set the tone for AMG’s next generation of electric performance vehicles, including a super-SUV scheduled for 2027.

Balancing Emotion and Business

Speaking at the Munich Motor Show, Schiebe highlighted the tension between passion and profitability:

“Emotionally, yes, we should do that. The question is whether there is a market that is big enough to justify the investment that is necessary. At least from a technology point of view, we know how to do that.”

The current ICE-powered AMG GT two-door is primarily bought as a second car by enthusiasts who value pure driving pleasure. Any electric version would need to capture that same emotional connection while delivering cutting-edge performance.

Market Uncertainty and Flexibility

Mercedes-AMG has not yet set a timeframe for the electric GT coupé. The brand remains flexible and could accelerate development if global demand for high-performance EVs surges in the coming years.

Interestingly, AMG already experimented in this segment with the SLS AMG Electric Drive, which famously set an EV lap record at the Nürburgring. However, that project was limited in scope and never received a direct successor.

ICE and EV to Coexist

If approved, the electric GT would coexist alongside the combustion-powered GT, which Mercedes plans to support “well into the next decade.” Schiebe emphasized that AMG’s strategy must balance innovation, brand image, and financial sense:

“We want to be technologically successful but also economically successful. At the moment, our combustion GT is very successful, but we constantly review our portfolio.”

A Halo Car in the Making?

Even if the EV coupé proves less profitable, Schiebe hinted that AMG might greenlight it as a halo car — a model designed to elevate the brand’s image, much like rivals do with their flagship vehicles.

If launched, the electric AMG GT would enter a new competitive arena, going head-to-head with the Maserati GranTurismo Folgore, currently the only EV super-coupé on sale. This would also position AMG ahead of rivals such as the Porsche 911, Aston Martin Vantage, and Ferrari Amalfi, all of which remain combustion-powered for now.

Why This Move Matters

The potential launch of an electric AMG GT isn’t just about performance — it’s about future-proofing the AMG brand. By embracing EV technology while maintaining its heritage of driving excitement, AMG could secure its position as a leader in the luxury performance EV segment.
