Mercedes GLC Electric Debuts at Munich IAA 2025 : A New Era of Premium EV SUVs

At the Munich Motor Show 2025 (September 9–12), Mercedes-Benz officially unveiled the long-awaited GLC Electric, a premium SUV designed to replace the outgoing EQC and push the brand’s electrification strategy forward. Contrary to rumors, the conventional GLC launched in 2023 will not be discontinued. Instead, the two models will coexist for at least one generation, offering buyers a choice between combustion-based (mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid) powertrains and a brand-new 100% electric platform.

This dual strategy mirrors what BMW plans for the X3 and iX3, giving Mercedes a stronger position in the competitive premium SUV segment. Positioned above compact EVs like the BMW iX1 and below the flagship EQE SUV, the GLC Electric represents a new cornerstone in Mercedes’ zero-emission lineup.

Retro-Inspired Design with Cutting-Edge Tech

Visually, the GLC Electric sets itself apart from its ICE sibling. Its most striking feature is a retro-inspired front grille, reminiscent of Mercedes models from the 1960s and 1980s, such as the W114. Unlike the functional grilles of the past, this one is sealed for aerodynamics (Cx of 0.24) and features an array of 942 LED pixels, capable of displaying unique light patterns.

The body is 13 cm longer than the standard GLC, measuring 4.85 m in total length and 1.91 m in width. Its proportions give it a strong yet elegant stance, bridging the gap between the GLC and the EQE SUV. Optional design packages, including full-width LED lighting and Turbine-style 21-inch wheels, enhance its futuristic yet nostalgic look.

High-Tech Cabin with AI Integration

Inside, Mercedes delivers its most advanced interior to date. The dashboard is dominated by a single 99.3 cm-wide digital screen, stretching from pillar to pillar. This futuristic MB.OS infotainment system integrates artificial intelligence to simplify usage, learning driver preferences for navigation, media, and driver-assist functions.

As standard, the GLC Electric will feature a three-screen setup (10.2-inch cluster + twin 14-inch central and passenger displays), while the panoramic Hyperscreen remains an option. Generous interior space comes courtesy of a 2.97 m wheelbase, offering rear passengers excellent legroom and a comfortable seating position. Cargo capacity stands at 570 liters, expandable to 1,740 liters, with the added convenience of a 128-liter frunk for charging cables and accessories.

Battery, Range, and Charging Capabilities

Underpinning the GLC Electric is the new MB.EA platform, engineered exclusively for EVs. A 94 kWh NMC battery paired with an 800V architecture enables ultra-fast charging up to 330 kW DC. Mercedes claims 300 km of range can be added in just 10 minutes, outperforming rivals like the Audi Q6 e-tron (270 kW) but slightly behind the upcoming BMW iX3 (400 kW).

WLTP range is estimated at up to 713 km, though real-world conditions suggest closer to 500 km depending on driving style and Autobahn use. Efficiency is further optimized by a two-speed transmission, similar to the one introduced on the new CLA Electric, improving highway consumption.

Performance and Driving Dynamics

At launch, the GLC 400 4Matic Electric will be the only version available. Powered by dual motors, it produces 490 hp and completes the 0–100 km/h sprint in 4.3 seconds, putting it in direct competition with the Audi SQ6 e-tron. Future variants are expected, including a single-motor entry version and a high-performance AMG derivative.

The SUV also inherits air suspension with adaptive damping from the S-Class, ensuring comfort across conditions. Rear-axle steering and advanced driver-assistance systems will be available as options. With a towing capacity of 2.4 tons, the GLC Electric will appeal to families and lifestyle buyers who value both luxury and practicality.

Price and Availability

Pricing is expected to start around €80,000, placing it between the current GLC plug-in hybrid and the EQE SUV. First customer deliveries are planned for spring 2026, with test drives scheduled by the end of 2025.

With its mix of retro design cues, cutting-edge digital features, and strong performance, the Mercedes GLC Electric is not just an EV alternative — it is a bold new chapter in Mercedes-Benz’s premium SUV story.
