Stellantis Extends Support for 1.5 BlueHDi Diesel Engine Chain Issues
The 1.5 BlueHDi diesel engine, widely used in Stellantis vehicles, has faced recurring issues with its camshaft chain breaking. Until recently, repairs were only covered for vehicles up to 5 years old or 150,000 km. However, as of January 13, 2025, Stellantis has extended its support to cover vehicles up to 7 years old or 180,000 km, a welcome change for many owners.
The Problem with the 1.5 BlueHDi Engine
The 1.5 BlueHDi engine, introduced in 2017, includes both a timing belt and a small chain responsible for driving the camshafts. Over time, this chain can loosen and eventually break, leading to significant engine issues. Stellantis increased the chain’s diameter from 7 mm to 8 mm in February 2023 to address the problem. However, older models rarely benefited from this improvement, leaving many owners frustrated.
Reports of chain failures have persisted, with numerous complaints documented by automotive publications and active Facebook groups. Some groups are even considering collective legal action.
Updated Coverage Terms
Under the new coverage, Stellantis will handle 100% of parts and labor costs for affected vehicles, provided certain conditions are met. This extended coverage, referred to internally as “special coverage,” applies to Citroën, DS, Opel, and Peugeot vehicles equipped with the 1.5 BlueHDi engine manufactured before February 2023.
To qualify:
- The vehicle must have had its last three services conducted according to the manufacturer’s guidelines.
- A delay of up to three months or 3,000 km for these services is permitted.
- Oil changes must adhere to the correct viscosity requirements.
- Repairs must be performed at an authorized Citroën, DS, Opel, or Peugeot workshop.
Owners may need to contact their local customer service center for assistance until Stellantis launches a dedicated claims platform.
Vehicles Eligible for Support
This extended warranty applies to a wide range of models across Stellantis brands, including:
- Citroën C3, C4, and Berlingo
- Peugeot 208, 308, 508, and 5008
- DS 7 Crossback
- Opel models featuring the 1.5 diesel engine
- Certain commercial vehicles and MPVs
While Toyota models like the ProAce Verso, which also use this engine, are excluded from Stellantis’ coverage, affected owners should reach out to Toyota’s customer service for assistance.
Warning Signs and Precautions
Drivers should remain vigilant for unusual noises from the engine, particularly during cold starts, as this could indicate a failing camshaft chain. However, Stellantis’ new policy does not cover preventive replacement of the chain. Repairs are only eligible if the problem is advanced enough to affect the vehicle’s operation.
How to Claim Support
Owners should schedule a diagnosis and repair at an authorized workshop. Be prepared for potential delays in securing appointments due to high demand. Although the new policy is generous, it does not provide retroactive compensation for repairs conducted before January 13, 2025.
