The Fourth-Generation Porsche Cayenne Will Be Fully Electric

The next-generation Porsche Cayenne, set to be the brand’s first fully electric version of its flagship SUV, is in development and has been spotted undergoing cold-weather testing in Sweden.

Spotted : Electric Cayenne prototype in Sweden

The fourth iteration of the Porsche Cayenne is gearing up for a 2026 launch, with spy shots revealing heavily camouflaged prototypes alongside the upcoming electric Porsche Macan. Porsche’s signature approach to minimal camouflage, using sleek black finishes rather than flashy psychedelic wraps, keeps the details hidden.

Although the prototypes are disguised, sharp observers noted a resemblance between the Cayenne’s headlights and those of the second-generation Macan. However, key design elements like the bumpers, side panels, and rear contours remain obscured by artificial cladding. One standout feature is a pixelated, slim light strip at the rear, signaling a futuristic aesthetic for the all-electric Cayenne.

Keeping the current Cayenne alive

Despite the arrival of this all-electric SUV, Porsche plans to retain the third-generation Cayenne, known internally as the PO 536. Launched in 2018 and refreshed in 2023, the current Cayenne lineup, featuring plug-in hybrid powertrains, will continue to be available. This includes:

  • E-Hybrid: 470 horsepower
  • S E-Hybrid: 519 horsepower
  • Turbo E-Hybrid: 739 horsepower

This dual strategy allows Porsche to cater to diverse customer demands, offering both electric and hybrid models while transitioning toward full electrification.

Built on the PPE platform

The fourth-generation Cayenne will utilize Volkswagen Group’s Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture, already featured in the electric Macan, Audi Q6 e-tron, and A6 e-tron. The platform promises advanced electric performance, including higher efficiency, improved range, and cutting-edge charging capabilities.

Why keep hybrids?

While the EU’s 2035 ban on new combustion engine cars necessitates a shift to electric vehicles, Porsche and other premium brands are hedging their bets. The continuation of hybrid models alongside EVs reflects the challenges of market adaptation and customer preferences during this transitional phase. For Porsche, hybrids ensure they remain competitive while easing consumers into the all-electric future.

Looking ahead

With its fully electric Cayenne, Porsche aims to maintain its legacy as a leader in performance SUVs while preparing for an electrified automotive landscape. The strategy to balance hybrid and electric models showcases Porsche’s adaptability in meeting both regulatory requirements and customer expectations.
