Unleashing Luxury: A Comprehensive Test Drive of the New Lotus Emeya

The Lotus Emeya, a 100% electric sedan measuring 5.14 meters in length, combines luxury, spaciousness, and sportiness, making its hefty weight of 2.5 tons almost forgettable. Colin Chapman, the founder of Lotus and the mind behind the slogan “light is right,” would likely be surprised by this imposing vehicle. Yet, he would also be impressed by its performance. Equipped with two electric motors that provide all-wheel drive, the Emeya delivers exhilarating acceleration. The Emeya S, with 603 hp, and the Emeya R, boasting 905 hp, promise thrilling experiences. The S can accelerate from 80 to 120 km/h in just 2 seconds, while the R achieves this in a remarkable 1.7 seconds. Despite its weight, the chassis expertly manages the instantaneous torque from the electric motors, offering an impressive and efficient driving experience.

A Cornering Heavyweight

The description of the Lotus Emeya R is truly impressive! The combination of air suspension, active anti-roll, rear-wheel steering, carbon-ceramic brakes, and Pirelli P Zero R tires provides an exceptional driving experience, especially on the winding roads of the Austrian Tyrol. The stability and agility of this car, despite its weight, are remarkable. However, the overly aggressive braking can be a drawback, particularly for passengers. Have you ever had the chance to drive a car with similar features?

The Emeya S: A Sufficient Option

The Lotus Emeya S offers a more natural braking feel thanks to its steel discs, making it a pleasure to drive. It quickly establishes itself as the preferred version, even without the advanced technologies of the R, thanks to its high-performing chassis in summer conditions. However, its heavy weight can be a disadvantage on wet roads. A common issue across all Emeya models is the limited depth adjustment of the steering wheel, which may be uncomfortable for taller drivers. Additionally, it’s advisable to avoid the mirror/camera option, as the screens are too small, poorly placed, and less effective than traditional mirrors. The rear visibility is also limited due to the small rear window and retractable spoiler.

In terms of comfort, the Emeya struggles to eliminate all vibrations caused by its large wheels (22 inches on the S, 21 inches on the R), despite the standard air suspension. In Sport mode, the car is relatively firm, lowering its ride height by 15 mm, but it is more comfortable in standard mode. The sound insulation is well-executed, despite some road noise, allowing drivers to fully enjoy the optional KEF audio system. With 15 speakers and the ability to deliver 3D sound and Dolby Atmos, the Emeya transforms into a true concert hall. The interior features a sleek design dominated by a beautiful 15-inch OLED display, and the equipment meets the high expectations for a car in this price range (€129,890 for the S, €154,090 for the R).

Ample Space Inside, Limited Trunk Capacity

With its length of 5.14 meters, the Emeya offers comfortable rear seating comparable to that of certain limousines. It provides a three- or two-seat configuration, with each rear seat featuring numerous individual adjustments. The trunk, along with a small “frunk” at the front for the charging cable, boasts a capacity of 509 dm³ in five-seat configuration. However, this figure seems optimistic due to the limited height under the load cover. Fortunately, the trunk is easily accessible thanks to the hatch, which includes a practical compartment under the floor.

The Emeya impresses with its rapid charging capabilities. Compared to the 800V battery of the Eletre SUV, the Emeya’s battery is slightly smaller (102 kWh vs. 112 kWh) but optimized to accept charging powers of up to 420 kW. During a break, we charged the Emeya S at an Ionity station, increasing its charge from 49% to over 80% in under 10 minutes, starting at a power level of 333 kW, then dropping to 285 kW. Lotus’s promise of charging from 10% to 80% in 14 minutes seems credible, provided you can find a powerful, available supercharger. With a range of 300 km on the highway between charges at 80%, the Emeya is ideal for weekend getaways or vacations, as long as you avoid areas with few high-power charging stations.
