F1-Inspired Mercedes-AMG GT ‘Motorsport Collectors Edition’ Marks AMG’s Unlikely Tribute to Recent Challenges

Mercedes-AMG is embracing its challenges in the 2024 F1 Championship with a unique tribute: the AMG GT ‘Motorsport Collectors Edition’. This exclusive coupe, limited to just 200 units, draws design inspiration from the Petronas-sponsored F1 racecars that have faced stiff competition from teams like Red Bull, Ferrari, and McLaren this season.

Based on the GT 63 Pro 4Matic+, a track-focused but road-legal version of the AMG GT sports car, this special edition boasts a striking livery that echoes the design of the F1 cars from the current and 2023 seasons. While Mercedes-AMG finished second last year, they were still outpaced by the dominant Red Bull team.

Unique F1-Inspired Design

Typically, a GT in Obsidian Black metallic paint offers a sleek, understated aesthetic, especially with the optional AMG Nite Package, which replaces chrome details with blacked-out accents. However, the Motorsport Collectors Edition takes it up a notch, featuring hand-painted stars on the tail and bright aquamarine stripes reminiscent of Petronas’ corporate branding.

These vivid details extend across the car’s side window graphics, sills, 21-inch wheel rims, and front bumper air intakes. Even the massive calipers on the carbon brake system are highlighted in the signature Petronas hue. Inside, the sporty theme continues with illuminated door sills, ambient lighting, and seats finished in a combination of Nappa leather and microfiber, all accented in the F1-inspired aqua.

Performance and Powertrain

While the exterior screams F1, the powertrain remains unchanged. Under the hood lies the same 4.0-liter bi-turbo V8 engine found in other AMG GTs. However, because it’s based on the GT 63 Pro, the Collectors Edition delivers 603 hp (612 PS), a boost over the standard GT 63 4Matic+, which produces 576 hp (585 PS).

With this power, AMG claims the car can accelerate from 0-62 mph (100 km/h) in just 3.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 197 mph (317 km/h). The special edition also retains the rear wing and front aero devices from the GT 63 Pro, ensuring optimal performance on the road and track.

Limited Availability and Expected Pricing

Mercedes-AMG has yet to reveal official pricing for the 200 units of the Motorsport Collectors Edition, or whether any have been pre-sold. However, industry insiders expect the price to start around £180,000/$200,000. With only 200 cars being produced, this limited edition is likely to become a collector’s item, especially among F1 fans.

For those who appreciate motorsport heritage and cutting-edge design, this AMG GT special edition offers a rare opportunity to own a piece of Mercedes-AMG’s F1 legacy, despite the challenges the team has faced this season.
