Stellantis Extends Support for 1.5 Blue HDi Diesel Engine Chain Issues

The 1.5 BlueHDi diesel engine, widely used in Stellantis vehicles (Peugeot, Citroën, Opel, DS), has been at the center of recurring problems related to camshaft chain failure. Until recently, repairs were only covered for cars under 5 years old or 150,000 km. But since January 13, 2025, Stellantis has officially extended support to 7 years or 180,000 km—a welcome relief for many owners.
A Common Issue Since 2017
First introduced in 2017, the 1.5 BlueHDi engine features both a timing belt and a secondary chain that drives the camshafts. Over time, this small chain may loosen and eventually break, causing serious engine damage.
In February 2023, Stellantis attempted to resolve the issue by increasing the chain’s diameter from 7 mm to 8 mm, but older vehicles were not retrofitted, leaving many owners frustrated. Multiple complaints have surfaced across automotive publications and Facebook groups, with some communities considering collective legal action.

Updated Coverage Conditions
Stellantis will now cover 100% of parts and labor for affected vehicles—provided these conditions are met:
- The vehicle must be equipped with a 1.5 BlueHDi engine produced before February 2023
- The last three maintenance services must follow manufacturer guidelines (with a grace period of 3 months or 3,000 km)
- Engine oil changes must comply with correct viscosity requirements
- All repairs must be conducted at an authorized Stellantis workshop
Until a dedicated claims platform is launched, customers should contact the customer service department of their respective brand.

Warning Signs to Watch For
Drivers should listen for unusual engine noises, especially during cold starts, which may indicate a loose or failing camshaft chain. However, preventive replacement is not included—support is only granted once performance is affected.
