Nissan’s New Terrano PHEV Is Targeting the Land Cruiser, with 429 HP and a Plug

Nissan is making a bold comeback in the rugged SUV space. At the Beijing Auto Show, the brand unveiled the Nissan Terrano PHEV, a tough, electrified off-roader designed to challenge icons like the Toyota Land Cruiser.

A serious Off-Road contender

This isn’t the Terrano you remember. The new version is bigger, tougher, and built on a body-on-frame chassis—just like a proper off-road SUV.

It’s expected to share its platform with a China-only pickup developed alongside Dongfeng, giving it real off-road credibility.

Under the hood, the Terrano PHEV could pack:

  • A 1.5L turbocharged engine
  • An electric motor
  • Combined output of 429 hp and 800 Nm of torque

That’s a huge leap compared to previous Terrano models and puts it firmly in serious off-road territory.

Rugged design that stands out

Visually, Nissan nailed the concept.

The Terrano PHEV features:

  • A bold front end with LED lighting and illuminated branding
  • A rugged skid plate and tow hooks
  • Off-road lights and roof rails
  • Chunky wheel arches and rock sliders

At the rear, a spare wheel mounted externally reinforces its hardcore adventure vibe.

Another concept joins the Show

Alongside the Terrano, Nissan also revealed the Urban SUV PHEV, a more futuristic and city-focused model inspired by the NX8 concept.

It features:

  • A sleek, minimalist design
  • Digital mirrors
  • Hidden door handles
  • A coupe-like silhouette

This second concept targets younger buyers, particularly in China.

Global ambitions

While details remain limited, Nissan confirmed that the production version of the Terrano PHEV will be sold in selected global markets—not just China.

Bottom line : With hybrid power, serious off-road hardware, and bold design, the new Terrano is shaping up to be Nissan’s most ambitious SUV comeback yet.
