The Freelander 8 Is Back : And It’s bigger than a Defender

The Freelander name is officially back, and this time, it’s going big. Born from the collaboration between Jaguar Land Rover and Chery, the all-new Freelander 8 has made its full debut at the Beijing Auto Show.

And it’s not just a comeback, it’s a complete reinvention.

Bigger than a Defender?

Yes, really. The Freelander 8 is longer, taller, and wider than the Land Rover Defender 110, putting it firmly in the large SUV category.

Built on the new iMAX platform, it’s designed to support multiple powertrains:

  • Fully electric (BEV)
  • Extended-range EV
  • Plug-in hybrid

This flexibility positions it right at the heart of today’s evolving SUV market.

A Bold, modern design

Visually, the Freelander 8 stays close to the Concept 97—and that’s a good thing.

Up front, you’ll find:

  • Square LED headlights
  • No traditional grille
  • Minimalist black air intakes

There’s also a LiDAR sensor integrated above the windshield, hinting at advanced driver-assistance systems.

The rugged look continues with:

  • Flared wheel arches
  • Protective side skirts
  • Roof rails
  • Black and silver alloy wheels

At the rear, the design is clean and modern, with a subtle spoiler and compact taillights. The concept’s suicide doors didn’t make it to production, replaced by more conventional doors.

A Tech-focused interior (Coming Soon)

While interior images haven’t been revealed yet, expectations are high.

The Freelander 8 is set to feature:

  • A massive Mini LED integrated display
  • “Zero-gravity” front seats for added comfort

Fast charging, future-ready

All versions will use an 800V electrical architecture, enabling ultra-fast charging speeds of up to 350 kW for electric models.

Global ambitions… With one exception

The Freelander 8 will be sold in multiple global markets, in both left- and right-hand drive. However, one major market is missing: the United States.

A new chapter begins

This SUV is just the start. The Freelander brand plans to launch six models over the next five years.

Bottom line: The Freelander 8 isn’t just a revival—it’s a bold new direction, blending size, technology, and electrification to take on some of the biggest names in the SUV world.
