Porsche Faces Class Action Lawsuit Over Taycan Battery Defect

Porsche is facing a major class action lawsuit in the United States following a significant recall of its 2020–2024 Taycan models. The lawsuit, filed by the firm Gibbs Law Group, represents owners and lessees of affected vehicles and seeks both compensatory and punitive damages.

Allegations of Safety Risks and Negligence

Lead plaintiff Miodrag Kukrika alleges that Porsche failed to properly disclose or address a “dangerous and widespread” defect in the Taycan’s high-voltage battery pack. The issue reportedly came to Porsche’s attention as early as February 2020, following a vehicle fire in a Florida residence.

“Porsche investigated the incident and has since received multiple reports of fires and owner complaints linked to the battery defect,”
the class action states.

The defect, which could cause the battery to short-circuit and potentially catch fire, led Porsche to announce a recall in October 2024. Until a permanent fix is implemented, the automaker has advised Taycan owners to limit charging to 80%. A new diagnostic system, expected in early 2025, will help identify anomalies in the battery modules and prompt replacement of defective units where needed.

Plaintiff’s Legal Claims Against Porsche

The class action accuses Porsche of:

  • Fraudulent concealment of the battery defect.
  • Breach of implied warranty of merchantability, arguing the vehicles were sold in an unfit and unsafe condition.
  • Negligent misrepresentation and omission, asserting Porsche failed to fully inform consumers about the risks.

The lawsuit seeks a jury trial and demands:

  • Injunctive relief requiring Porsche to repair or replace defective batteries.
  • Punitive, compensatory, treble, and exemplary damages for affected class members.

“The battery defect poses a significant safety risk not only to drivers and passengers but also to homes and structures where these vehicles are parked,”
the lawsuit asserts.

Broader Implications for Porsche

This case could have serious implications for Porsche’s EV strategy and its reputation in the electric vehicle space. The Taycan, one of Porsche’s flagship EVs, plays a crucial role in the brand’s future. A class action of this scale raises concerns over quality control, battery safety standards, and customer trust in EV reliability.

As the case proceeds in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, it is expected to be closely watched by Taycan owners, industry experts, and the broader automotive market.
