Smart is entering a new chapter in its electrification journey, as the brand confirms the arrival of a next-generation Smart #2, a compact two-seater urban EV set to launch in late 2026. This fresh iteration will revive the iconic ForTwo spirit but with updated technology and design aimed at modern city living. Even more exciting is the announcement that it will be joined by a longer, more practical sibling: the Smart #4. This four-door model is expected to bring back the functionality of the discontinued ForFour, but with a more advanced and versatile approach tailored for Europe’s evolving EV market.
Smart Europe CEO Dirk Adelmann shared the update during the Munich Motor Show, highlighting that the #4 “needs to look like a successor” to the old ForFour. While the previous model was essentially a stretched ForTwo, the upcoming #4 is being carefully engineered to provide genuine practicality without losing Smart’s hallmark compact footprint.
European Engineering at the Core
Unlike the current Smart lineup developed primarily by Geely in China, the #2 and #4 will be based on a new platform co-developed with Mercedes-Benz in Europe. Adelmann emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating: “This team makes sure we have a European product that is ready for European customers.” The platform had to be compact enough to maintain the agility of the Smart #2, while still allowing scalability for the larger #4.
The CEO admitted the project took longer than expected, as Smart has been working on a feasible new ForTwo since 2019. With no partner found initially, the development process was extended by nearly three years. “Better late than never,” Adelmann noted, underlining that economies of scale are essential for the brand’s future.
Performance and Market Positioning
Although full specifications have yet to be revealed, hints suggest the Smart #2 may feature a dual-motor setup and an ultra-tight turning radius—ideal for urban navigation. The Smart #2 will maintain its unique role as Europe’s only two-seater EV in the A-segment, while the larger #4 will directly compete with strong rivals such as the upcoming Renault Twingo EV and the production version of VW’s ID.Every1 concept.
Expanding the Smart Family
The addition of the #2 and #4 completes the brand’s lineup, which already includes the Smart #1, #3, and #5. Smart’s naming strategy distinguishes between even numbers for cars and odd numbers for SUVs. Rumors also point to a potential Smart #6 sedan, aligning perfectly with this structure.
Meanwhile, existing models are also being updated. Both the #1 and #3 crossovers are scheduled for a major 2026 update, introducing hardware improvements, with a more extensive facelift planned for 2027. The Smart #5, launched in 2024 as the largest model to date, will continue to represent the upper end of the portfolio.
With its expanded lineup, Smart is positioning itself not just as a niche city car maker but as a serious contender in Europe’s rapidly growing EV market. The arrival of the Smart #2 and #4 signals a return to the brand’s roots—small, innovative cars—while ensuring adaptability and practicality for the future of urban mobility.
