BMW M850i Edition M Heritage : A Farewell Tribute to the Legendary 8 Series

BMW is officially saying goodbye to the iconic 8 Series with a highly exclusive send-off: the BMW M850i Edition M Heritage. This special edition pays homage to the original BMW 850 CSi of the 1990s, a car that cemented the 8 Series as one of the Bavarian automaker’s most iconic grand tourers. With production of the modern 8 Series set to end in 2025, this model serves as a fitting tribute to a performance-luxury coupe that has spanned over three decades of innovation.
Exclusive Design & Colours Inspired by the Past
The Edition M Heritage will be offered in a carefully curated palette of five BMW Individual heritage colours directly inspired by the legendary E31 generation:
- Bright Red
- Mauritius Blue Metallic
- Cosmos Black Metallic
- Oxford Green Metallic
- Daytona Violet Metallic
Complementing these retro-inspired shades are model-specific 20-inch M wheels finished in Orbit Grey, paired with discreet black brake calipers, adding a subtle yet aggressive look.
Luxury Meets Performance
Inside, the Edition M Heritage exudes a blend of performance and exclusivity. The M Sport seats are trimmed in premium black Merino leather with M contrast stitching, while the dashboard and doors feature Alcantara surfaces with carbon-fibre inserts and model-specific insignias. Completing the cabin are M seat belts, reminding occupants of the car’s motorsport DNA.

Under the hood, the car retains BMW’s potent 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8, producing 390 kW (523 hp) and 750 Nm of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels, enabling the Gran Coupé to sprint from 0–100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds before reaching an electronically limited 250 km/h top speed.
Exclusivity & Production Numbers
Unlike previous 8 Series body styles, the Edition M Heritage will only be available as a Gran Coupé, underlining its blend of practicality and performance. Just 500 units will be produced worldwide, with production scheduled to begin at the end of 2025.
Pricing starts at $131,575 (approx. R2.3 million), making it one of the most exclusive BMW M Performance models of recent years. Collectors are expected to move quickly, as this could become a future classic alongside the legendary 850 CSi.
Why It Matters
The BMW 8 Series has always symbolized the perfect balance between luxury and driving dynamics. With the Edition M Heritage, BMW is not only celebrating a model that defined a generation, but also paying tribute to its motorsport and design legacy. As the automotive world shifts toward electrification, this V8-powered swansong marks the end of an era for BMW enthusiasts worldwide.
