Mercedes C-Class 2026 : First-Ever Electric Version, Facelift, and New Tech to Challenge BMW’s Neue Klasse

Mercedes-Benz is gearing up for one of its most important launches in recent years: the refreshed C-Class 2026, including its first-ever all-electric C-Class. This marks a major step in the brand’s electrification strategy as it positions itself to rival BMW’s upcoming Neue Klasse 3-Series, which is also expected to arrive in 2026.

While the electric C-Class will grab headlines, the facelift of the combustion and plug-in hybrid versions is equally significant. Spy photographers recently caught the C-Class wagon prototype undergoing testing, revealing some intriguing updates.

Exterior Updates : Starry Lights… But Not Everywhere

The biggest changes are on the front fascia. New headlights now feature the star-shaped daytime running lights (DRLs), a design element Mercedes is introducing across its lineup to strengthen brand identity. This gives the C-Class a sharper, more distinctive road presence.

Curiously, however, the rear lights on the prototype don’t appear to adopt this motif. Mercedes has gone to great lengths to camouflage the taillights, which suggests something new is hidden underneath. Typically, prototypes run with old components until close to launch, but the extra disguise hints at a surprise awaiting buyers.

We also expect a more assertive front grille, with a bolder design reminiscent of Mercedes’ iconic grilles from the 1980s. The surround will no longer be body-colored, and the central three-pointed star could even be illuminated, enhancing the luxury feel.

Interior & Tech : Next-Gen MBUX and Advanced Assistance

Inside, the latest-generation MBUX infotainment system will be introduced, featuring improved connectivity, sharper graphics, and more intuitive voice control. Mercedes is also set to push driver-assistance technology further, ensuring the refreshed C-Class keeps pace with BMW’s Neue Klasse, which will emphasize high-tech features when it debuts.

Comfort and quality materials will remain central, reinforcing the C-Class’s reputation as the compact luxury benchmark.

Powertrains : PHEVs Take the Spotlight

The prototype spotted in AMG Line trim displayed EQ badging, but it isn’t a full EV. Instead, the dual filler flaps confirm it as a plug-in hybrid (PHEV).

Currently, Europe enjoys the C300e PHEV, producing 309 hp (313 PS) and delivering up to 106 km (66 miles) of WLTP range. The facelift could improve battery efficiency, pushing the range even further before the four-cylinder petrol engine kicks in.

In the U.S., only the C300 Mild Hybrid with 255 hp (258 PS) is offered today, but expanding PHEV availability would be a smart move as American buyers increasingly demand electrified options.

A Strategic Response to BMW Neue Klasse

By introducing its first electric C-Class while simultaneously enhancing the combustion and hybrid models, Mercedes-Benz is making the C-Class a cornerstone in its electrification strategy. This dual approach allows the brand to satisfy both traditional buyers and those ready for a fully electric future.

The C-Class has always been one of Mercedes’ best sellers worldwide, and with these updates, it’s positioned to remain a formidable rival to the BMW 3-Series Neue Klasse—combining style, innovation, and efficiency in one package.
